Hugin & Munin

Ravens of Odin

Ravens of Odin

These stories may not be stories solely about Huginn and Muninn, but we can guarantee that if Odin was there, his ravens were also there playing their role.

Huginn and Muninn are Odin’s ravens and are an important part of Norse Mythology and Viking lore. Ravens have played a huge role in many different types of mythology and Huginn and Muninn are, arguably, the most well-known.

Although their roles in many of these stories could be described as ‘side characters’, it would be doing Odin’s ravens a severe injustice if their important in the Norse tales and beliefs was overlooked.

Huginn ok Munin
fljúga hverjan dag
Jörmungrund yfir;
óumc ek of Hugin
at hann aftr né comiþ,
þó siámc meir um Munin.

Huginn and Muninn
fly every day
over the vast earth.
I fear for Hugin
that he won’t return,
though I fear more for Munin.
(Poetic Edda)
